Are board meetings lively and productive, or is getting a quorum a problem? Does the work get done by many or just a few of the usual suspects? If you're feeling the board could use some improvement or you are frustrated with its activities, this session is for you. This session is an overview of the characteristics and activities of well-functioning boards. It is designed for board chairs, board members who want to be better board members, and staff who have responsibility for the board. While few boards are ideal, there are many strategies that can be adapted to almost any board to enhance board functioning. Topics to be covered include board and staff roles, financial and legal responsibilities, board organization and committees, effective board meetings, the culture of various boards, meeting board members' needs, and strategies for basic board functioning. Through lecture, discussion, and activities, participants will learn how to improve their own board's performance.
